SlingPath has introduced the first competency-based online training for satellite newsgathering (SNG). "Basic SNG Operations" is an introduction to satellites and their use in newsgathering, aimed at new entrants and those looking to gain an understanding of the satellite newsgathering processes. No prior knowledge is required, and since this is an online course, it is accessible by anyone from anywhere at anytime.

The course is broken into seven modules, presented in a highly graphical, interactive and user-friendly approach. At the end of each module there is a self-check test with a comprehensive multiple-choice examination at the end of the course. A passing grade is required in order to receive the certificate of completion. The course typically takes about seven hours, at the student's own pace, and is available at US $595 per seat.

The online course is followed by a three-day practical course which includes a hands-on examination. The follow-up hands-on portion will be held at one of eight practical training centers being established around the globe.

The online course has been approved and accredited by satellite industry bodies SUIRG and WBU-ISOG (World Broadcasting Union - International Satellite Operations Group).

Advent Communications has taken the lead in modifying video exciter equipment design to incorporate SUIRG's Interference Source Location specifications.

The latest version of the SD/HD-capable DVE5000 (Digital Video Exciter) L-band, MPEG encoder now complies with the SUIRG SatID requirement which can be used to identify rogue transmissions swiftly in order to prevent satellite channel interference.

The DVE5000 integrates an HPA controller with the encoder, which supports a wide range of TWTA and SSPA's. The encoder supports QPSK, 16 QAM and 64 QAM as well as DVB-S2. Other devices in the range include and Antenna Control Unit and an Upconverter. The 5000 range electronics are only half-rack in width and 1U in height, which reduces weight as well as rack space.
